What is a USB Hard Drive?
Literally, the letters stand for Universal Serial Bus. Universal Serial Buses were developed in the mid 1990s and are standard in use today. USB simply refers to the protocols for the connections that are used between computers and electronic devices.
USB hard drives, therefore, are hard drives that are connected via USB to computers. Normally, the hard drive of a computer is located inside the computer itself, but sometimes this internal drive does not contain enough storage space to accommodate people’s needs. Alternatively, some people need to be able to store their information and physically move it – a USB hard drive allows them to do this easily. With a USB hard drive, users can connect the hard drive to their computer, move information onto it and then disconnect the hard drive. The information from the computer is stored on that hard drive and can be accessed from any computer the USB is connected to.
These days, USB hard drives are built to store tons of data. They may range in storage capacities from a few gigabytes to a terabyte. Even though they are available with very large storage amounts, many of these drives are aimed at the average, at-home personal computer user. The devices are very simple to operate and many people now use them to store sensitive data. Another popular use for USB hard drives is as a back-up device, since it is always advised that people back up the data on their computers, especially sensitive or important information.
So what is a USB hard drive? It is a device to which people can back up their computer data and know that their information is safe and secure for whenever they may need it.
